With a population of 60,550, Schwäbisch Gmünd is the second largest in the East Württemberg region. The town engages in a plenitude of activities with its twin towns in Europe: Barnsley (UK) since 1971, Antibes (FR) since 1976, Székesfehérvár (HU) since 1991 and Faenza (Italy) since 2001. Official delegates as well as citizens from the twin towns regularly visit Schwäbisch Gmünd and vice-versa. The members of the Municipal Council are involved in the majority of the town-twinning activities on a regular basis, either as active participants or as guests. These activities include school exchange and work placement programmes, musical and cultural exchanges as well as expert meetings to exchange best-practice models in administration, business management, environmental and infrastructural policies. In 2015, the town established a yearly “Twin Town Market” with marketeers and artists from the twin towns.
